a few weeks back, an older gentleman i volunteer with stepped back with a polite gesture to allow me to go down the stairs before him. i thanked him but got sidetracked by someone talking to me and i stood there for a minute (i was blocking the stairs) and he grinned and said,

"chivalry isnt dead! it's just disabled!"
perfect, huh!!! hehehe!
Josey, lol that was a sweet gesture. Unfortunately, etiquette says that the man should go down the stairs before the woman... up stairs, after her.
The reason is, if the woman slips and falls, she lands on the man who, in theory, can break her fall.
Oh well. He tried. :)
